elder Matthew Jones
Taiwan, Taichung mission
What's up everybody?! Got lots of news for this week so I'll get right into it. Saying goodbye to Elder H last week was really sad. He's one of the most genuinely nice people I've ever met. He was always a fun time and a great missionary. He was also very patient with me and helped my Chinese a ton, so I'm very thankful for that. After that, I was in a 3 man with my homies Elder M and Elder H for a couple days which was a blast. We had lots of lessons, got treated to some really good food, and had a great time. We also got to do service for two different members out in their fields. That was super fun. I was rockin' the classic Taiwanese rice hat and boy that was a life saver. if I didn't have that guy, I would've gotten a 3rd degree sunburn haha. It is actually super fun to have those opportunities. I don't think I will ever sweat more than I do when we are out doing service for the members in their fields, so it's a great memory :)
On Thursday, I woke up at 4:30 and headed up to Taizhong to get my companion. When we got there, I was reunited with Elder G, my MTC companion. It's been over a year since we've seen each other, and it was super fun to be able to catch up and talk about the good ol' days in the MTC. He's training in Houfeng, my second area, so that will be super fun for him. We got some training from President and Sister Teh, and then met the trainees. My trainee is Elder Y from Layton, Utah. I was so pumped when I found that out, cause I knew there were some people from Layton coming to this mission. He lives like 5 minutes from my house which is super fun. He's a snowboarder and also went to Basin so we've probably crossed paths before. He also loves tennis and skating, and we're having a great time so far. One thing that has been super cool about being around Elder Y is seeing how brave he has been. On the very first night I was like, "ok, you're leading us in these next couple contacts," and he was super down. He helped us get a really cool add on the first night, who became our new investigator :) Unfortunately, she's moving to Gaoxiong this week, so we won't get to meet with her much more but she's super cool, she'll do great with the missionaries over there. Elder Y has inspired me to not be afraid to talk to anyone, which has been really cool to see. He's a BEAST! Super pumped to be able to work with him.
Another thing that I've learned from Elder Y is the power of the Gift of Tongues. When Elder Y got up to give his testimony in sacrament meeting, he was really nervous, but he got up and did a great job. He was using good words and whippin' out the grammar phrases that they teach at the MTC, and I really felt the Spirit through him as he expressed his love for the people here. It reminded me to never take for granted the extra help we have in learning this language. It was a really cool feeling for me to be able to see that. It's also been cool to think back on when I started and see how far I've come. Training has been super fun so far, and I'm stoked to keep it going!
Well that's pretty much it for this week. A lot of our investigators bailed on us for church this week, but that's alright, we'll get em. Just gotta keep going out and doing our best, and of course doing everything with a smile on our faces. Serving the Lord is great. Even when it's hard, it's great. Hope you all have a great week, love you so much!!
