elder Matthew Jones
Taiwan, Taichung mission
We finally had the breakthrough!! After weeks of tough finding, we were blessed to find 4 new investigators this past week, and a lot of them are looking pretty good!! It was a really cool feeling to actually be seeing success. There was one day in the week where we got 3 adds on 3 consecutive people, and Elder Y and I were on cloud 9 haha. Granted, 2 of them didn't come to their appointments, but one of them is named Brother J and he is soooo cool. After we finished sharing the Book of Mormon, we were walking away from the shop where we sat down to teach him and he had already flipped it open and started reading the intro. It was a really cool feeling. We also found a new investigator named S who lived in Australia for 2 years and likes snowboarding!! He's literally the first person I've ever met in Taiwan who has actually been on snow before, and he really wants to change his life around, so we are stoked about that. Another one, Brother L, recently got back from China after working there for over 10 years. When he got back, he told his mom, a less active member, that he wanted to go to church, and they showed up only 2 days after he had gotten back. We started teaching him, and he's really nice and willing to learn. He already prays everyday, so that's a great start.
This week, I had the special opportunity of helping the other Elder's investigator Brother L get baptized. He and I have grown close over these past 4 months and I've seen basically his whole conversion. He is an amazing person who was willing to make changes in his life to be baptized. He's a great example to me, and it was a pleasure to be able to participate in that wonderful ordinance with him.
This week, we had the opportunity to work with a few members in the ward. The most notable was the X family, who live up in Sandimen. We had dinner with them on Sunday night, and they fed us an amazing American feast. They even had mashed potatoes and funeral potatoes!! It was the best thing ever, and we all ate til we couldn't eat anything else haha.
As you probably know, this was the week that we got smartphones, and boy are they cool. They are going to change missionary work here in Taiwan forever. Now, because we are communicating with people on the app LINE, they actually respond to us quickly, and it's improved our ability to share scriptures, videos, and follow up. It's gonna be a great resource to us, and we are excited to figure out how we can best use it to fulfill our goals.
This week as I was reviewing talks from last General Conference, I came across two quotes that I really love. The first is "The least, most inferior spirit now upon the earth is worth worlds," a quote from Brigham Young. I love how the gospel helps us to know our true value in the site of God. Another was by President Uchtdorf, saying "The Good Shepherd will find you. He will lift you upon His shoulders. And he will carry you home." I know through this gospel and through Jesus Christ, we will be able to return home. I'm so grateful for that knowledge and how it's blessed my life, and I fill privileged to be able to share it with these people.
Hope you all have a great week!! Love you all so much!!
